Jazmin Beheeheehee good question! I think people make up stories about Gatsby because he can be a very quiet person at times who likes to keep to himself. Many people want to know more about him, but they are too afraid to ask. I think this is why people just start making up stories about him. Here is an example: If you think someone is pregnant but they don't mention it. You begin to make assumptions and you really want to know so you ask your friend to ask the women but they say, "No, you ask". In the end you both just conclude that she is pregnant (without really knowing). (I hope that made sense!) I don't think it is fair for people to make up stories because, just like any gossip it isn't right. If you don't know what really happened in someone's past don't judge and don't start making up stories. If you really want to know something that bad, then just start a conversation with the person and ask. "I think he killed a man" is an obvious example showing how a woman at the paty just made somehting up based on what she thought of him. She judged Gatsby based on his quiet personality. He isn't always quiet, but there are times in the book when he is. An example would be during one of his parties Nick saw him standing on the stairs just watching people.
I think they make up these stories about him because of the image he portrays to the people at the parties and everyone who doesn't know him. He stays in his home, sending servants and hiring others to bring him things as well as do work for him. For example, when he first invites Nick to one of his parties he sent his butler with an invitation. They had never met before and there for it gave off this mysterious impression to Gatsby. Having huge parties where over half the guests aren't invited seems to be a very uncommon thing at the time. I believe they technically don't have the right to judge him or assume things about him like they do, but it is understandable because of such little knowledge he gives them. Or even when he does give some piece of information, such as how he went to Oxford, the way he says it gives people the intuition he isnt being completely truthful. It makes sense that they have to come up with their own stories to help settle their curiosity for the unknown about Gatsby.
Good question! Since he's so mysterious, he's kind of setting himself up for rumors and gossip. He paints those images in people's head. Is it right for them to do this? Well... no. Even though he asked for it, I don't think it's right.

Of course it's not fair for people to make up stories about him, but Gatsby could help his cause and let people know his life story and not be so hidden. Like at his parties ; Gatsby just hang out in his mansion and does not show his face. He could be a bit more social. If he was more social, people wouldn't make assumptions and make up stories about him. There is something strange about him though. He is a very shadey character.

He is very shy and quiet which people, that usually come to his parties, would not understand since they are commonly very materialistic and obnoxious. These people also like to gossip, which makes Gatsby the perfect person to talk about. He does not say whether these people are correct, unless it is a person he is really close to and people know who he is at parties.
Gastby is very shut of to the world, besides his parties. I dont think he has many true friends to back him up on this gossip. So people just say what they here. Is this right no,probably not but does he lead people to beilve that he lives a mysterious life yes.
Jazmin, In my opinion, Gatsby is such a mysterious man, and so socially desecrate, when he throws giant parties at his large estate the guests that show up to attend start to talk nonsense and rumors. Gossip is a temptation that most people cannot resist, if it is fair or not. And when theres the littlest misconception of a story it turns into a rumor, like the example of these people believing that Gatsby killed a man.

If you know something important about a person it seems as if you are friends and talk often. Gatsby threw big parties that he barely knew most people that attended, many people made up the stories to make it seem like they were a personal friend of Gatsby's.
